ministries

The worship ministries of the Grantham Church exist to bring honor and glory to God. We believe that God has provided the way for relationship with Him through the sacrifice of Jesus. In Worship, we celebrate and enact this relationship which is empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We confidently come together as a community of faith, anticipating God's presence with us as we open our hearts before Him through song, prayer, silence, communion, testimony, drama, scripture and sermon. As we encounter the transforming presence of God in corporate worship, we are sent to be His reconciling presence in our world.

From time to time the artists among us work individually or together to incorporate visual arts into the worship services. A group of interested persons helps plan and set up our art gallery with a yearly calendar of exhibitions designed to encourage, inform, educated and inspire.

Monthly Taize Prayer Services in 2008

6:30 p.m. in the Grantham Church Sanctuary

We invite you to set aside a time of "sanctuary" and join us for this hour of contemplative prayer through this beautiful form of singing.

Taizé music is a form of sung prayer which has captured the hearts of many young and old. The songs were developed for the thousands of people who visit the Community of Taizé in France each year. Loved for the beauty of their short, repetitive, accessible, Scripture-based worship songs; the music lends itself to repetition and development -- unison, two-voice, three-voice and so on -- and the eventual over layering of instruments. The simplicity of the music is accessible and textually uncomplicated, thus uniting the entire gathered assembly in a single communal song while at the same time freeing the individual to lift his or her heart to the Lord in prayer.
be a part of a support team

Projection Team
These folks take turns each month up in the projection booth. Jon Anderson coordinates the staffing for both services.

Sound Technicians
People are needed to operate the sound booth for both services under the equipment manager Bob Getty.

Ushers
If you are interested in serving as an usher, contact the head usher listed below. There are immediate needs for ushers at the first service. Head usher for the first service is David Durbin. Head usher for the second service is Aaron Zercher.

Visual Arts
Artists are invited to create artwork for corporate worship. Banners and digitally projected artwork can help usher people into God’s presence. An artistic eye is also needed to prepare the sanctuary for worship, including displays, checking the worship space for correct placement of plants and flowers, etc.

Drama Team
This new ministry team is planning for several skits for the fall and the Advent season. Contact Liz Barr at ebarr@messiah.edu, or 814-330-2411 to see how you can be involved in a drama ministry.

Worship Arts Weekend
A planning group meets throughout the year to plan for Worship Arts Weekend. Members from our sister church in Harrisburg also join in the brainstroming for workshops, speakers, etc. Contact Karen Durbin for more information.

Art Gallery
The Art Gallery seeks to provide a venue for the Christian artist and to encourage greater understanding of the arts in the life of the congregation. Several exhibitions throughout the year require set-up help and assistance putting together artist's receptions. An informal group also meets annually to help plan the calendar for the coming year. If you have ideas and want to be a part of this growing ministry, contact Geoff Isley at geoff@isleydesign.com.

core values for worship

As God-Focused, Christ-Centered, Trinitarian

1. We value the dynamic Trinitarian aspect of worship. Each service acknowledges and incorporates Trinitarian components.

2. We value glorifying God for His many attributes and we give thanks for the gifts of salvation through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.

3. We value worship that helps us experience God as both intimate and transcendent.

4. We value a progression in worship that celebrates the story of God. In worship, we understand that we are on a journey together theme-based planning is helpful in focusing our thoughts and actions.

5. We understand that the proclamation of the Word through preaching and scripture reading are vital for the edification of the gathered community.

6. We understand that we are part of the on-going, dramatic narrative of God’s work. We value items in worship that give us a sense of time and space. Newer and older songs, hymns, readings and prayers reflect saints through the ages to the present. The Christian Year is a helpful rhythm as we identify our lives with the life of Christ.

7. We value Biblical Worship. This is consistent with the theology of the Brethren in Christ Church

Corporate/Communal

8. We value the corporate nature of worship. Since we are called to community, times of greeting one another, passing the peace of Christ and ministry to one another through testimony, prayer and communion are vital.

9. We value times of prayer that offer a variety of formats for the congregation to actively engage in conversation w/ God.

10. We value inter-generational worship since Since all ages are part of our community. Care is taken to include all ages in both leadership and participation. Limitations of different generations are considered in planning. Care is taken to not design services on a purely generational basis.

11. We strive to create an atmosphere for congregational involvement in which leaders are prompters, not entertainers.

12. We value the inclusion of global music and experiences. Frequent inclusions of this type express the hospitality of a loving God and help us maintain a sense of the world community of which we are a part.

13. We value varied expressions and authentic human emotion in worship such as reflection, silence, exuberance and grief

14. We value worship that calls us to serve God in ministry to one another through various gifts such as music, drama, art, prayer and our finances.

15. We value worship that is welcoming to visitors.

Life Changing/ Incarnational/Spiritually Formative

16. We understand that worship is both a responding and a shaping experience (activity)

17. We value times of confession and commitment in worship as we respond to the movement of the Holy Spirit among us.

18. We understand that in worship, we participate in the divine actions of God
